The Political Commission of the Mozambican Liberation Front (Frelimo), the country’s ruling political party, has for the second time postponed its Central Committee meeting because of Covid-19 preventative measures.
The meeting did not take place in March 2020 due to the Covid pandemic. It had been re-scheduled for March this year and the latest postponement was decided at this Wednesday’s meeting of Frelimo’s Political Commission.
The Political Commission chose “to postpone the session”, the meeting’s final communiqué reads, adding that the party would continue to develop “actions at the level of organisation [of the meeting], in the context of the public calamity”.
The upcoming Central Committee session will be the first since the victory of Frelimo and its presidential candidate, Filipe Nyusi, re-elected for a second term in the general elections of 15 October, 2019.
The Central Committee is the party’s highest decision-making body, between congresses.
Mozambique had, by Wednesday (17-03), reported 733 Covid-19 deaths and 51,376 cases, 78% of them deemed recovered, with 165 currently hospitalised.
