Filipe Nyusi, president of the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo) and the head of state, said on Thursday that the ruling party should adapt to the new contexts at the local and international level.
“At the level of statutes, we want to increasingly perfect the definition of the nature, principles and working methods of our party, taking into account the new dynamics at the domestic and international level,” he stressed.
On the other hand, the revision of Frelimo’s programme aims to reaffirm “a vision of development focused on building a prosperous and inclusive society,” Nyusi said.
The party leader was speaking during the opening of the second extraordinary session of the Central Committee, meeting today in Maputo to approve the documents that will be discussed at the organisation’s 12th congress, which is due to begin in eight days.
The readjustment to new contexts must be reflected in the review of the programme and the statutes of the organisation through a proposal to be submitted to the 12th congress.
At today’s session, the Frelimo Central Committee will also consider the proposed rules of procedure for the next congress, the party’s highest organ, he said.
The Central Committee is the most important decision-making body immediately below the congress and, according to the statutes, will later elect the party’s presidential candidate at a specific meeting.
The 12th Frelimo Congress is scheduled to take place at the organisation’s premises in Matola, on the outskirts of Maputo, from 23 to 28 September.
