Natural gas exploitation projects in the Rovuma basin must include provision for supplying the domestic market, especially at a time when there is talk of the possibility of building a second floating hydrocarbon extraction platform.
Until now, Rovuma gas exploitation has been carried out by the Area 4 Coral Sul project, whose main purpose is export.
But, during a meeting with the private sector, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy (MIREME), António Manda, urged the diversion of some of this resource to internal consumption, particularly for the materialisation of industrial projects.
“In addition to generating energy, gas also serves as a raw material for the production of ammonium, urea, methanol, liquid fuels, contributing to agriculture, mining, industrial development and transport,” he noted.
Manda explained that gas reserves could trigger energy generation projects, responding to national electrification challenges, in a context of energy transition.
In fact, he considered this a necessity, taking into account the urgency of diversifying the energy matrix for the sake of sustainability, efficiency and security.
