The Secretary-General of Frelimo, who has been on a working visit to Sofala province since Wednesday, has asked party members to urge Sofala communities to take ownership of the problems related to instability in the province and in Cabo Delgado, and to find solutions.
“What needs to be done to end the war in Cabo Delgado must interest everyone,” he said yesterday. “We are a united nation and we have to put an end to the killings in that part of the country and not resort to social media to spread untruths, instead of encouraging our young people in the Defence Forces who are protecting the area.”
Anything to the contrary “discourages efforts to find a solution” to the problem in Cabo Delgado “and does nothing to contribute to well-being” either there or in the centre of the country.
It is essential for Mozambicans to find “peace, to guarantee development,” the Frelimo secretary-general maintains.
“The solution cannot be just Frelimo’s or the government’s. All Mozambicans are called upon to contribute to the common good. Therefore, we must all take ownership of the problems. It is a national problem, and the solution should be of interest to everyone,” he explains.
Roque Silva ended by urging his party to turn the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic into a catalyst for progress.
“We have no alternative, because if we get to 2024 and tell the population that our electoral promises have not been fulfilled because of Covid-19, nobody will believe us,” he warned, adding that the fundamental need at this moment was to secure peace.
This Friday, Roque Silva visited Búzi, where he met with victims of Cyclone Idai, which devastated central Mozambique in March, 2019.
