An alleged attempted robbery at the home of a businessman in the Mozambican province of Nampula ended in a shootout between a group of 14 individuals and police officers, the police confirmed yesterday.
According to Nampula police spokesperson Rosa Chaúque, the incident occurred in the early hours of yesterday morning in the town of Nametil, headquarters of Mogovolas district, in the north of the country.
“Fourteen individuals went to the home of a Bangladeshi citizen, who had been buying and selling sesame seeds. We became aware of this and, thanks to the police who were on patrol, were able to intervene immediately,” the spokesperson explained.
Chaúque added that the suspects, upon realizing the police presence, and armed with firearms, including an AKM machine gun, “used them against the police”.
“There was an exchange of gunfire between the individuals and the police. We have not recorded any injuries,” Chaúque said, adding that the suspects “managed to escape and are currently in an unknown location”. The police are conducting investigations on the ground “to track down these individuals, so that they can be brought to justice to be held criminally responsible”.
The police spokesperson added that, according to the victims’ statements, the suspects also entered the residence through the back, trying to reach an area that allegedly held “large sums of money”.
