At least 41 people were killed and 34 injured, 21 seriously, in the 30 serious road accidents which occurred in the week 2–8 April in Mozambique.
The fatalities include the 16 people who died in the early hours of Monday 4 April in the village of Mavanza in the Vilankulo district of Inhambane province, when a passenger bus on its wa to Maputo ran into a stationary timber lorry.
The General Command of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) has reiterated its appeal to road users costumer to be considerate and motorists in particular to apply the principles they learnt in their driving lessons.
Police spokesman said that in the same period last year there were 30 deaths resulting from 42 road accidents and 79 wounded, 31 of them seriously.
Of accidents in the week just ended, eight were thought to be caused by speeding and three by poor pedestrian road sense. In addition, there were 15 run overs seven collisions between cars, four skidding and overturning, among other collisions.
In an attempt to impose discipline on the road, the police inspected 38,703 vehicles, 89 of which have been taken by various irregularities, 14 citizens arrested for making themselves behind the wheel without qualifications for that purpose, 4,718 fines imposed, 395 letters driving and 36 pamphlets confiscated.
In that same week, the police reportedly arrested 2,522 individuals. Of these, 2,400 for violation of borders and the remaining for other crimes.
