Six hundred and fifty-eight people lost their lives in 679 road accidents on the country’s roads during the first nine months of this year. Another 1,418 were injured.
The figures mean that, on average, more than two people die per day in Mozambique as a result of road accidents.
According to sector authorities, this is not a normal situation.
The figures were released in Maputo on Thursday by Minister of Transport and Communications Mateus Magala, at the opening of the ministry’s XL Coordinating Council.
Minister Magala acknowledged that the country was experiencing a critical phase, characterised by violent road accidents.
The government has therefore declared road safety a top priority, invoking the mobilisation of all stakeholders in an effort to reverse this scenario.
