The bridge over the Revúbuè river between the cities of Tete and Moatize was reopened on Monday to pedestrians, bicycles, motorcycles and txopelas, to the relief of the population who endured the partial destruction of the infrastructure by Tropical Depression Ana.
The reopening results from the completion of the assembly of the metal structure to replace the decks torn off by floodwaters on the 25th of January, forcing users to resort to the Kassuende bridge, at much higher costs and time.
The opening was carried out by the Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources (MOPHRH), Carlos Mesquita, who explained that the passage of cars would for the time being remain prohibited.
After changing the deadline for the assembling of a metal bridge over the Revúbuè river, which was initially scheduled for July due to the engineering required to replace the decks, the Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources travelled to Tete yesterday to assess the stage of execution of works.
After meeting with the contractor, inspector, representatives of the National Roads Administration and various sectors involved in the works, this Monday, November 28, Minister Mesquita found that there was still work to be done for the fortification and improvement of the base (pillars and footings) which are already in the final stage, with only pedestrians, motorcycles, bicycles and txopelas so far being authorised to use the bridge.
Mesquita explained that “this decision is, in principle, temporary, because there is work still in progress, because of the assessment that was made, for this type of load in the way that I have just mentioned. This will not interfere with the continuation of the technical work that is still being carried out on the pillars, but it will nevertheless depend on the flow of water that we may have in the rainy season, that is, if the river level rises enough, the authorities will issue timely warnings, so that other rules that we will stipulate are observed”.
It should be noted that the bridge over the Revúbuè river between the cities of Tete and Moatize, relieves the city of Tete and the Samora Machel bridge of heavy traffic and facilitates the road connection between the city of Tete and the border town of Cassacatiza, via the N7 and N9 roads, as well as international traffic to and from Zambia.
