Revenues at the port of Maputo, Mozambique’s largest port, increased by 500 million meticals (about €8 million) in the first half of 2018, 20% more than in the same period in 2017 the company management said on Friday.
The Maputo Port Development Corporation (MPDC) earned 3.12 billion meticals (€44 million), compared to 2.6 billion meticals (€36 million) in the first half of last year.
The increased income was a result of increased capacity at the port, the company said.
The company carried out dredging work in 2016 and 2017 to increase the depth of the channel from 11 metres to 14.3 metres allowing it to receive ships that were twice as heavy.
In mid-March, the company said that Portuguese construction firm Mota-Engil was going to conduct works (now in progress) worth €51.7 million to upgrade 1,000 metres of quayside.
These quays will be able to handle larger ships, the MPDC said in a communiqué.
