The Ressano Garcia-Infulene power line, which supplies electricity to the province and city of Maputo, resumed operations on Saturday evening, after three weeks out of service following the vandalising of three pylons.
The pylons collapsed on the night of March 14 following the theft of some bracing angle components. The same phenomenon was later detected in seven other pylons, which however remained upright while the components were being replaced.
The signal for reactivation was given in Ressano Garcia on Saturday by the director of Southern Transmission at Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM), Celso Saete, who went to the site to witness the completion of the last tower, the installation of the conductors and removal of supports from the working area.
Saete said that work and preliminary needs assessment had started on March 15th a few kilometres from EDM’s Ressano Garcia headquarters. The goal was to finish the job on Sunday, but the technicians were able to finish early, so the line is now transporting both the energy imported from South Africa and that generated in the natural gas power plants located in the border town of Ressano Garcia.
At least 147 angle-pieces removed from the towers, some of which were already being used in the construction of stalls and grocery stores, were seized in Ressano Garcia. Three individuals suspected of involvement in the crime are currently being detained.
The supply of energy to the city and province of Maputo is ensured by three substations connected in a ring, so that any disturbance in the lines that connect to the Maputo Substation, after covering distances of up to 1,000 kilometres, can cause severe constraints on the electricity supply.
Nevertheless, according to our source, in this case, the power supply was not affected.
