Train circulation on the Ressano Garcia line, in Maputo province, has resumed after five days of stoppage due to the derailment of a cargo train.
The incident, involving a freight train on the Ressano Garcia-Maputo route, occurred in Chanculo, Moamba district, last Sunday.
Of the 50 wagons carrying chrome, six derailed, two overturned completely and four went loose.
Preliminary information indicates intense heat as one of the causes of the derailment, said the director of railway operations at the Mozambique Ports and Railways company (CFM), in the southern region of the country, Arnaldo Manjat.
“The derailment could be linked to several factors. This temperature issue could also be linked,” he said.
The Ressano Garcia line is of vital importance for the development of Mozambique and South Africa, and is crucial to the country’s foreign trade.
