Two of the three railway corridors in southern Mozambique were closed by accidents until yesterday. After a derailment on the Ressano Garcia line on Sunday, yesterday a collision between a freight train and a truck blocked the Goba line, which connects the Port of Maputo and neighbouring Eswatini.
In the case of the Goba line, the accident occurred at the Beluluane level crossing, affecting rail traffic.
The Mozambique Ports and Railways (CFM) company sent a team yesterday to assess the damage with a view to resuming traffic, which had not happened by the time this edition went to press.
In the meantime, a commission of inquiry comprising Mozambican and South African technicians is investigating the causes of the derailment on Sunday of a train transporting iron and chrome on the Ressano Garcia line.
At the same time, a team was sent to clear the line in order to restore rail traffic as quickly as possible.
The information was shared by Adélio Dias, Director of Communication and Image at CFM, who was interviewed by ‘Notícias’ following Sunday’s derailment of a 50-wagon freight train.
Preliminary work indicates that a defect in the rails was the cause of the accident that caused seven wagons to overturn at the entrance to the Chanculo station, in Moamba district, Maputo province.
At the time of going to press, work was still underway to reopen traffic on the rail corridor that connects South Africa and the Port of Maputo.
The accident affected not only the movement of freight trains but also of people who depend on rail transport to fulfil their work and social obligations in the city of Maputo.
