Residents of the town of Caphiridzange in Moatize district, Tete province, have vandalised the local police station in retaliation for the supposed release of an individual accused of murder.
They destroyed one of the walls of the police station, but without causing any casualties.
The authorities claim that the accused had already been arrested and convicted by the courts and had served his sentence and therefore been released, a narrative that the population rejected.
Moatize administrator Eugénio Muchanga said he regretted the popular unrest and that the authorities were working to clarify the case.
Muchanga added that the allegations were false and the people simply associated the accused with homicide cases in the region, and that justice could not be taken into one’s own hands.
