Some residents of Nametil town, in Mogovolas district, in the northern Mozambican province of Nampula, have been forced to abandon their houses in search of safer places because of intensive shooting in the early hours of Thursday.
According to Nampula provincial police spokesperson Rosa Chaúque, the shooting resulted from an exchange of fire between 14 assailants and a police patrol unit at around 04.00. She said that the group managed to escape and nobody was detained.
“The 14 men, some of whom were armed with automatic rifles, had just carried out a robbery at the home of a Bengali businessman. The trader is one of the main buyers of sesame from local producers”, she said, cited in Friday’s issue of the independent newssheet “Carta de Moçambique.”
The incident took place two days after the headquarters of the Luluti administrative post, in the same district, was the scene of acts of vandalism by around 300 illegal miners.
According to Chaúque, at least 12 people have been arrested on charges of taking part in the rioting in Luluti, in which four vehicles were set on fire and seven stores vandalized. Some of the detainees were in possession of goods stolen from local stores.
