Groups of citizens from various neighborhoods in the cities of Maputo and Matola mobilized this morning to remove trash and barricades placed in the streets during violent protests, allegedly in response to the results of the October 9 elections. The cleanup efforts began yesterday afternoon in many residential areas of both cities.
In each neighborhood, multiple groups armed with brooms, shovels, and wheelbarrows are sweeping and removing solid waste from the roads, giving residential areas a renewed appearance after the unrest experienced during the week.
However, in some areas of Matola, such as the Malhampsene dump, certain individuals continue to charge vehicles for passage. A similar situation is occurring at the Hulene dump in the city of Maputo. In Matola-Rio, there is an illegal checkpoint where drivers are being stopped. In the Machava-Baião area, tire burning persists, preventing the normal circulation of vehicles.
