Maputo, 26 October 2019 –
The President of the Republic, Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, has issued a statement on behalf of the Government of Mozambique strongly rejecting the continuing sanctions against Zimbabwe imposed by the US government and the European Union and in force since 2001.
“Against all appeals made in March 2019, these sanctions were renewed for another year as the new government’s policies are alleged to continue to pose an “unusual and extraordinary” threat to Washington’s foreign policy,” the statement says.
The communiqué recalls that at the 39th Ordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), held on 17 and 18 August 2019 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, the leaders of the regional organisation expressed their solidarity with the Republic of Zimbabwe and called for the immediate lifting of sanctions to enable the socio-economic recovery of the country.
“The Republic of Mozambique demonstrates its solidarity with the Zimbabwean people and joins the other SADC Member States who are calling for the lifting of these sanctions so that the Zimbabwean people can live together effectively and harmoniously in the global village,” the communiqué says.
