Several foci of smoke and the sound of heavy weapons were seen and heard issuing from the administrative post of Quiterajo on Tuesday of last week by fishermen in Crimize and Chilongo, in Mucojo administrative post.
Quiterajo and Mucojo administrative posts are close, and both located in Macomia district, Cabo Delgado province.
The fishermen interpret the signs as denoting action by the Defence and Security Forces (FDS) within the scope of the ongoing operation aimed at reaching some terrorist bases.
A few days ago, the population of Macomia and those seeking shelter in the administrative post of Chai were warned to avoid Quiterajo, precisely because of FDS operations.
Reports emanating from the region say the Defence and Security Forces have killed an unspecified number of terrorists in Marijilane region, near Pangane, specifically on a farm said to be property of General Alberto Chipande, a veteran of the national liberation struggle and senior member of Frelimo.
The terrorists are said to have been caught roasting beef.
Another offensive is reported to have taken place near Lake Tibamawe, which lies between Nambo, Nacutoco and Nfunzi villages.
FDS member commits suicide
Another report indicates that an FDS member assigned to the headquarters town in the district of Macomia committed suicide by firearm in a barracks in Xinavane district on Friday night.
It is said that, shortly before killing himself, the man had learned by telephone from relatives that his wife had been caught with another man the night before, in the deceased’s own home. The body of the deceased was transported to his natal province of Niassa on Saturday.
Environment day
Also in the district of Macomia, local administrator Tomás Bedae is going ahead with events demonstrating that peace and security is returning to the town and other parts of the district.
This Saturday, Bedae and other members of the local government joined residents of Xinavane neighbourhood and those displaced from the administrative posts of Mucojo and Quiterajo to celebrate World Environment Day.
In addition to planting several shade and fruit trees, a speech encouraging the population in their continued fight against terrorism was delivered.
