Mozambican health authorities on Thursday announced the first case of monkeypox in the country.
The patience is an adult male, resident in the southern province of Maputo, whose results were confirmed on Wednesday (05).
According to the Health Minister, Armindo Tiago, the patient arrived “at the hospital” on Tuesday (04) with high fever and skin lesions, and has just returned from an international trip.
“The sample was collected on the same day and taken to the National Health Institute, where the diagnosis was confirmed by the PCR [Polymerase Chain Reactions] technique,” said Tiago, at a Maputo press, convened to share last developments about the epidemiological situation in the country.
“The patient is currently being treated in a health unit and, as we mentioned, he is in a satisfactory state of health,” the minister added.
Meanwhile, Tiago calls for people to remain calm and avoid any campaign of disinformation.
The minister assured that health authorities were ready to quickly track the disease, stating that they would step up epidemiological surveillance, particularly for suspected cases.
He also said that health professionals are being trained to deal with the disease should further cases be diagnosed.
The most common symptoms of monkeypox infection include fever, headache, back and muscle pain, fatigue, increase in lymph nodes and the progressive appearance of eruptions affecting the skin and mucous membranes.
The virus is transmitted through close physical contact, especially with injuries or body fluids, including through contact with contaminated material such as sheets, towels, or personal utensils.
