Mozambique has registered 59 new coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases to 2,914, continuing with 19 deaths, the Ministry of Health announced on Monday.
Of the new cases, “57 are of Mozambican nationality and two are foreigners, one Rwandan and the other Ukrainian,” said Benigna Matsinhe, deputy director of public health, in an update on pandemic data at the Ministry of Health in Maputo.
Most of the cases announced today were registered in Maputo city (25), followed by Manica province (15), Cabo Delgado (7), Nampula (5), Maputo province (4), Sofala (2) and Gaza (1).
“The cases reported today are in home isolation and at this moment the identification of their contacts is underway”, she added.
Of the cases already registered in Mozambique, 2,700 are of local transmission and 214 are imported, while 1,196 people have been reported as recovered.
The health authorities also indicate that there are 16 people interned and that “they suffer from various chronic pathologies associated with Covid-19”.
Of the active cases in Mozambique, the city of Maputo, the country’s capital, has the highest number, with 679 infections, followed by the province of Maputo, with 320 cases, both in the south of the country.
Since the announcement of the first Covid-19 case in Mozambique on 22 March, the country has conducted 78,877 tests of suspected cases, having screened over 1.7 million people.
28,274 suspected Covid-19 cases have been placed in home quarantine and 4,401 are still being followed up by health authorities.
