Mozambique: First case of mpox diagnosed in Cabo Delgado

Mozambique on Tuesday reported 123 more positive cases of Covid-19, bringing cumulative total infections to 4,039, the Ministry of Health said in a statement yesterday. The country currently has 1,729 active cases, of which 15 are hospitalised, with 2,283 recoveries (56%) and 23 deaths.
“Of the 123 cases reported today (September 1), 121 are Mozambican and two are of Zimbabwean nationality,” an update from the ministry notes. The reported cases, of which six are under five years old, are in isolation at home and the process of identifying their contacts is underway, the statement adds.
Of the 123 newly-diagnosed cases announced yesterday by the health authorities, 49 are from the city of Maputo, 29 from Niassa province, 15 from Maputo (province), 15 from Manica, six from Nampula, three from Tete, three from Cabo Delgado , two from Gaza and one from Inhambane.
Of the total number of infections that the country has already registered, 3,773 cases are of local transmission and 266 cases are imported.
The Mozambican capital continues to record the highest number of active cases in the country, with 1,005 infected persons, followed by Maputo and Nampula provinces with 186 each, and Cabo Delgado with 181 cases. The remaining seven Mozambican provinces have fewer than 60 cases between them.
The city of Maputo has so far registered a total of 1,418 confirmed Covid-19 cases, of which 10 have died, 405 recovered, and 1,005 are still active.
Yesterday, the Ministry of Health reported 113 more people “fully recovered from Covid-19”, 106 of whom are Mozambican nationals and seven foreigners. Of the latter, three are Zimbabweans, one South African, one Nigerian, one Indian and one Portuguese.
Of the 113 recoveries announced on Tuesday, 72 are from the city of Maputo, 20 from Maputo province, seven from Cabo Delgado, an equal number from Sofala, six from Tete and one from Zambézia.
Mozambique has screened just over two million people and tested a total of 98,455 since the first case was announced on 22 March.
A total of 34,257 people suspected of being infected have been directed to quarantine at home, and 4,838 continue to be monitored by health authorities.
The Covid-19 pandemic has already claimed at least 847,071 lives and infected more than 25.2 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to the latest report by French agency AFP.
