Mozambique health authorities on Saturday announced the 10th COVID-19-related death in the country. a 57-year-old man who returned from South Africa on June 30 and was admitted to the Macia health centre (southern Gaza province) due to serious heart disease, reads the communique of the National Directorate of Public Health. The sample for Covid-19 testing was collected on July 1 and the positive result was revealed three days later. The patient was since being treated for the comorbidities that had led to his hospitalisation anddthe evolution of his clinical condition was considered as satisfactory until it worsened in the last few days. The Ministry of Health yesterday reported another 33 confirmed coronavirus cases in the country.
Of the 33 new cases reported yesterday, out of 967 tests performed between Friday and Saturday in the country, nine cases were detected in the province of Nampula, nine in the province of Maputo, four in Maputo City, four in Zambézia, three in Cabo Delgado, two in Tete. one in Inhambane and one in Gaza.
“The cases reported today are in isolation at home” and “the process of mapping their contacts is underway”, adds the statement.
Active cases
Mozambique has 1,015 active cases, distributed as follows: Niassa Province – 12; Cabo Delgado – 231; Nampula – 277; Zambezia – 27; Tete – 26; Manica – 17; Sofala – 20; Inhambane – 45; Gaza – 46; Maputo Province – 148 and Maputo City – 166.
The country currently has a cumulative of 35 individuals hospitalised due to Covid-19, seven of whom are under hospital care [the others are presumably hospitalised in isolation centres] and all suffer from various chronic pathologies associated with infection with the new coronavirus.
Yesterday were also reported eleven more cases fully recovered, bringing the tota nmber of recoveries to 408.
According to Saturday’s brief, Mozambique has an accumulated total of 1,435 cases of infection with the new coronavirus, 10 deaths and 408 recoveries
To date, Mozambique has tested, cumulatively, 45,189 suspected cases, of which 967 in the last 24 hours,.
In Africa, there are 14,399 confirmed deaths in more than 664,000 infected in 54 countries, according to the most recent statistics on the pandemic in that continent.
Among African countries that have Portuguese as their official language, Equatorial Guinea leads in number of infections and deaths (2,350 cases and 51 deaths), despite having revised the cases down after several days without updates, followed by Guinea-Bissau (1,949 cases and 26 deaths), Cape Verde (2,014 cases and 21 deaths), Mozambique (1,435 cases and ten deaths), São Tomé and Príncipe (741 cases and 14 deaths) and Angola (687 infected and 29 deaths).
Brazil is the Portuguese-speaking country most affected by the pandemic and one of the hardest hit in the world, when counting the second number of infections and deaths (more than 2 million cases and 77,851 deaths), after the United States.
