The National Migration Service (SENAMI) last week repatriated 31 foreigners staying in Mozambique illegally, SENAMI spokesman Celestino Matsinhe, revealed today at a press conference in Maputo.
The 30 Malawian nationals and one Zimbabwean were detected in the province of Tete and repatriated to their countries of origin via the Zóbue and Cuchumano border crossings.
The number represents a more-than 500 percent increase over last week, when six foreign citizens were repatriated for various migration infractions.
Over the same period, SENAMI registered an 89 percent reduction in cross-border traffic, as a result of state of emergency restrictions currently in force.
In all, 10,758 travellers of different nationalities crossed national borders, of whom 5,101 entered the country and 5,657 left.
Maputo, Tete, Niassa, Zambézia, Manica and Cabo Delgado provinces all registered cross-border movement, Matsinhe said.
