Members of Mozambique’s former rebel movement Renamo demonstrated on Thursday at the Renamo offices in Xai-Xai, capital of the southern province of Gaza, demanding the resignation of the party’s leader, Ossufo Momade.
According to a report in the independent daily “O Pais”, the demonstrators, who claimed to be demobilised former guerrillas, demanded the closure of the Renamo offices.
They demanded the removal, not only of Momade, but also of the Renamo Gaza provincial delegate, Felix Tivane. There were exchanges of insults, and even of blows, between the demonstrators and the supporters of Momade.
The former guerrillas claimed that Renamo had lost its former status as the dominant force in the opposition because of lack of internal dialogue and corruption during the seven years that Momade has led the party. They demanded an urgent meeting of the Renamo National Council, and the immediate removal of Momade as leader.
They accused Tivane of “arrogance”, but Tivane told reporters that the dissidents “are trying to destabilise the party”.
The demonstrators promised to continue their protest at the Xai-Xai office until Momade is sacked as president of the party.
