Mozambique’s main opposition party, Renamo, on Friday demanded that the police reveal the identity of those in charge of the renewed wave of kidnappings of business people and their relatives and that the kidnappers be held accountable irrespective of their political or social status.
Addressing a press conference at the party’s headquarters in Maputo, Renamo Secretary General Andre Magibire said Renamo wants a much stronger commitment to the safety and security of every citizen across the country, not only the business class.
“The re-emergence of kidnappings in broad daylight is our major concern and unfortunately the police authorities have not yet been able to unveil the true identity of the perpetrators and the motivations for these barbaric crimes,” Magibire said.
Shortly after 18.00 on Sunday, a businessman was abducted by an armed gang, after parking his vehicle close to his Maputo residence. “He was kidnapped in the city centre by criminals who had been tracking his movement down the streets,” added Majibire.
On Tuesday, armed kidnappers abducted another citizen in central Maputo, this time a woman of Portuguese citizenship, who is the wife of a prominent businessman in the northern city of Nampula city.
The latest kidnapping occurred in the central city of Quelimane, where four armed and masked criminals abducted the son of a local businessman on Thursday.
After this series of kidnappings, Magibire expected the police to give their habitual speech, in which they claim to have operations underway to find the kidnappers. “However, since abductions started to threaten the country, the police have never cleared up any case”, he declared.
Renamo believes these kidnappings are part of a profitable industry which generates millions for the kidnappers out of the blood of honest and hardworking men and women
