The interim leader of the Mozambican National Resistance (RENAMO) called for the party’s municipal candidates to fight for victory as a way of paying tribute to former guerilla leader Afonso Dhlakama.
“Remembering Dhlakama is obtaining Renamo’s victory, it is respecting what he defended, his vision of the country’s democratisation,” Ossufo Momade told Lusa following a committee meeting in the town of Gorongosa, where the former guerilla leader died on 3 May.
The local elections are scheduled for 10 October and the campaign kicks off next week on 25 September.
According to Mr Momade, the political commission has defined strategies to avoid electoral fraud to ensure the party’s success.
Renamo and Frelimo fought a civil war for 16 years, which ended in a peace deal in 1992, but insurgency arose again in 2013. The Mozambique government and Renamo resumed talks last year.
