The President of Mozambique, Daniel Chapo, said in Maputo this Thursday, after receiving his Portuguese counterpart, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, that relations with Portugal were “extraordinary”, predicting that they would deepen during his visit to Lisbon next week.
“I was just telling the President of the Republic that next week we will be there [in Portugal] so that we can continue to talk and, therefore, further deepen our relations of friendship and cooperation and begin to take concrete steps that can produce results for both countries,” Daniel Chapo said after receiving the Portuguese president, who ends a three-day visit to Maputo this Thursday, at the Presidency of the Republic.
On Wednesday, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa took part in the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the proclamation of Mozambique’s independence on June 25, 1975. Daniel Chapo will be making a working visit to several European countries in the coming days, including Portugal, on July 3.
“Our focus is on the growth and economic development of Mozambique, and countries are like people; no one grows alone, no one develops alone. We need our friends to be able to grow, neighbours and also other relations of friendship and cooperation. It is in this sense that we believe that economic and financial cooperation is extremely important, both for Portugal and Mozambique, so that we can grow and create better living conditions for our people,” he added.
Daniel Chapo, the first Mozambican president born after independence, acknowledged the “excellent relations” between the two countries, “historical, of friendship, of cooperation, but also of fraternity and even ties of family, in addition to ties of language” between Mozambique and Portugal.
“It is a privilege and a great honour for us to welcome the Portuguese head of state, the President of the Republic, here in Mozambique, in Maputo, and especially at a special time, which is the 50th anniversary of Mozambique’s independence,” said Daniel Chapo.
After a meeting of around 40 minutes with the Portuguese President, the Mozambican head of state gave a “very positive” assessment of the current situation.
“We have assessed our relations of friendship and cooperation at this time, which are therefore extraordinary, relations of friendship and cooperation, and I would also like to take this opportunity to look to the future in order to continue to strengthen the relations of friendship and cooperation between Mozambique and Portugal, not only political relations, not only commercial relations, as you know, Portugal is one of Mozambique’s biggest cooperation partners, but also economic and financial relations, so that we can continue to grow together,” he said.
