The U-20 team that won the Cosafa Cup on Sunday was welcomed home by supporters and managers on Tuesday.
There was already a party going on at Maputo International Airport before the arrival of the ‘Mambinhas’, with everyone drumming, singing and dancing in warm-up, while the organisation prepared flowers for our great young players.
The delegation was scheduled to arrive at 12:45 p.m., but the flight insisted on not showing up on time. The tension was inevitable. Some sat, while others prepared their devices so that they wouldn’t fail to register the historic moment.
And because it really was historic, the press was also out in full force, everyone looking for the best angle to capture the finish, because champions do not come home every day.
Around 2 p.m., the much-awaited moment finally arrived.
All dressed in white, a symbol of peace – inner peace, but also the peace that soothes the hearts of millions of Mozambicans who had never before experienced a moment such as this.
There was so much emotion that it spread to anyone who passed by. It was up to the Secretary of State for Sport to do the honours. “They did an excellent job. Tomorrow [this Wednesday] we will all have lunch with the President of the Republic,” said Carlos Gilberto Mendes.
A visibly moved National Junior Football Team Captain Celton Jamisse spoke for the group. “We are all happy. We thank the Mozambican people for their reception and support. All of this was thanks to God and our trainer Dário Monteiro,” the player said.
A happy man, Dário Monteiro repeated what he had already said when he won the title: that all the merit goes to the players.
To cap it off, there was a party and a march through the main arteries of the city of Maputo.
