Mozambique: Teachers take to the streets in Matola in protest over unpaid overtime
The Minister of Education and Development, Jorge Ferrao, announced that school lunches are to be reintroduced in areas affected by drought. The decision was announced in Inhambane, one of the worst-affected provinces.
The measure aims to reverse the rising trend of students abandoning the educational system. According to Ferrao, whenever the school provides a lunch, dropout numbers fall.
“When there is a possibility of the child eating, or drinking a glass of milk, the school attendance grows. In Changara municipality (Tete province), hardly a child is out of school because they have a meal there. Besides giving more consistency to their learning, a meal improves the child’s cognitive ability,” Ferrao says.
Ferrao also revealed a plan to provide schools with a water supply.
