On Thursday morning, the President of the Republic, Daniel Chapo, participated in the Extraordinary SADC Summit, called due to the situation of instability in the East of the Democratic Republic of Congo, which involves the occupation of military troops from the M23.
The proposal that was launched at the Extraordinary SADC Summit, and which is yet to be developed, is the withdrawal of troops, a process that must be balanced so that no security vacuum remains in the region, hence the need for it to be gradual and systematic.
According to the President of the Republic, Daniel Chapo, the situation on the ground, in this case, in the East of the Democratic Republic of Congo, has worsened considerably and the supply lines for food, medicine and other essential goods are practically closed, which is why with each passing day the situation does not correspond to what is desired.
Despite the serious constraints, efforts are being made at various levels within SADC to restore peace and security in the Democratic Republic of Congo region.
As a country, said the President of the Republic, Mozambique always defends dialogue and democratic efforts, which, on the one hand, are being carried out by Angola, which recently assumed the presidency of SADC in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
“As Mozambique, our position is to continue to support the efforts of Luanda and Nairobi to restore peace in that region,” stressed Daniel Chapo, adding that the country sent its condolences to the grieving families of the troops who lost their lives, from South Africa, Malawi and Tanzania.
“We take this opportunity to, once again, as Mozambique, defend the diplomatic solution for peace and stability in the region,” Chapo stressed, during the press conference on Thursday morning, in Maputo City.
The Head of State said that during the Extraordinary SADC Summit, he acknowledged the efforts of the President of Congo, who has engaged SADC to contribute to peace. Chapo also highlighted the efforts of the President of Tanzania, who chairs the TROIKA, the security body in SADC, and the President of Zimbabwe, for having convened the summit and, above all, in his capacity as president of SADC at this time.
“As a country, we will continue to advocate for the need for efforts made by Rwanda and Nairobi for peace and stability in the eastern region of Congo,” stressed Daniel Chapo.
