The mapping of irregularities in the tourism sector by the Tax Authority of Mozambique (AT) is allowing the recovery of revenue previously lost to tax evasion by tourism enterprises in Mozambique.
Amorim Ambasse, director of the Digital Economy Taxation Unit, explained that the project comprises several phases, the first of which was characterized by mapping the tax situation of the sector from 2019 to 2023 and, based on the findings, regularizing infractions.
“Here we try to find out if the operator has a NUIT and pays taxes. And based on this, any infraction is regularized. This work is being done continuously and there are already results. Taxes have been recovered since June of this year,” he said.
The second stage involves registering tourist resorts on the tourism management platform (PIGTur) of the National Tourism Institute (INATUR), with a view to facilitating monitoring of the sector.
This is a tourism management and promotion tool that aims to make communication between the different stakeholders involved in destination management, promotion, research, acquisition and marketing of tourism products and services more flexible using information and communication technologies (ITC).
To date, just over 300 resorts and almost 20 travel agencies have been registered on the platform.
This action is supported by Decree No. 74/2022, of December 30, which requires the registration of all resorts and tourist enterprises such as restaurants, catering services and accommodation.
The AT points out that one of the advantages of registering on this platform is that all other state institutions that currently travel physically to seek information for statistical purposes can access it through the system.
“By registering, the tourist agent has the benefit of reducing the level of inspections. This platform, which is part of the Integrated Tourism Management project, also allows the state to promote tourist resorts,” Ambasse explained.
