The Mozambican Minister of Transport and Logistics, João Matlombe, claims that the rehabilitation work of the Anchilo section of the country’s main north-south highway (N1), about 15 kilometers from the northern city of Nampula, will be concluded within two weeks.
According to the minister, the section, which was destroyed three weeks ago by cyclone Jude, is ninety per cent complete and it is expected that in a fortnight the road will be open to vehicles.
“We’ve already started work and we’re making every effort with the contractor to see if we can restore the road in the next two weeks. So it’s ongoing work, and we hope that the rain doesn’t continue to fall”, he said.
Matlombe also said that in order to avoid future interruption of the section and facilitate the connection between Nampula and the neighbouring provinces of Niassa and Cabo Delgado, the government will purchase metallic bridges.
“We’re in the process of acquiring metallic bridges, which will allow us to intervene during rainy periods. We’ve already had three cyclones this year, which demonstrates our vulnerability to climatic events. Efforts are being made to ensure that the provinces of Niassa and Cabo Delgado don’t suffer from a lack of basic products. At the moment, access to Niassa and Cabo Delgado via EN1 is very limited and we are aware of this”, he said.
“That’s why part of the services are being carried out via coastal shipping, which is to ensure that there is at least no shortage of fuel in Cabo Delgado and also that basic necessities are available in that part of the country”, he added.
