The Traffic Police, the Mozambican Association for Victims of Road Accidents and driving schools are all urging the introduction of a single driver identification number, to beef up the recording of infractions and assure accountability, weekly newspaper Jornal Domingo reports.
Such a number would ensure that drivers are automatically screened for infractions and unpaid fines whenever they interface with a public entity. Most drivers only remember to pay fines when renewing licenses.
The head of the Department of Instruction and Education of the Traffic Department of the General Command of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM), Celeste Muxanga, said work was in progress within the Ministry of the Interior to realise the idea, but could not suggest an implementation date because of the scheme’s relatively high costs.
The introduction of the single driver identification number would also aim to curtail the number of accidents on the public roads. In the last two months, about 200 people have lost their lives and 152 others suffered serious injuries in 208 road accidents, in many of which one or more of the drivers involved did not stop.
According to the authorities, most road accidents are caused by carelessness – on the part of pedestrians and passengers as well as drivers.
