The deputy minister of Education and Human Development says he is not aware of the increase in exam fees from 30 to 50 meticais to 300 meticais in some schools in Maputo province. MINEDH says that these hikes must have originated in the schools themselves.
After ‘O País’ reported the increase in exam fees for the 10th and 12th Grades in some schools in Maputo province, Deputy Minister of Education and Human Development Manuel Bazo reacted this Monday, saying that the measure was taken without the knowledge of the ministry.
“We have no official information. What can be advanced is that the exam fees, according to the decrees, vary from 30 to 50 meticais for 10th and 12th Grades respectively,” Bazo explained.
Meanwhile, the Provincial Directorate of Education in Maputo stated that the outbreak of Covid-19 forced an increase in the number of exam centres and the consequent increase in fees.
“We will assess the situation and try to understand. It is probably an initiative of the schools themselves,” Deputy Minister Bazo explained.
The exam fee is a condition for students sitting their final exams. The Provincial Directorate of Education in Maputo explained that the amount is intended to cover the costs of food and transport for teachers and the purchase of computer material.
