The Council of Ministers yesterday approved regulations concerning the leader of the opposition, instituted through Law number 33/2014 of 30 December, Notícias reports today.
Approved in the final phase of the seventh legislature more than five years ago, the law aims to confer greater dignity and ensure the effective participation of the targeted individual in national political life.
The law establishes a set of rules that determine the status of this personality and assigns him treatment fitting his status, providing rights including honours and precedence under the terms of the rules of protocol, and a working office duly equipped and enjoying a special protection and security regime.
In parallel, the law imposes duties, including the beneficiary placing the national interest above all others, adopting standards of behaviour that guarantee the prestige and dignity of the office, and participating in the organs of which he or she is a member.
Also in yesterday’s XIII ordinary session, the Council of Ministers approved the decree that creates the Development Office of the second Millennium Challenge Compact programme for Mozambique, a temporary public entity with the mission of ensuring the development of poverty reduction measures.
The emergency situation and the balance and prospects for the application of the new coronavirus prevention measures and their impact on the country’s economy were also considered.
In the scheduled post-session press conference, the Minister of Health, Armindo Tiago, explained that only the evolution of the coronavirus in Mozambique would determine the extension or not of the state of emergency decreed on April 1 by the President of the Republic, and scheduled to end on 30 April.
“Besides, it is not up to the Ministry of Health to decide on this. One thing is certain: many factors will be considered in taking this decision, especially the number of cases and the effective implementation of preventative measures so that we do not have more people infected,” the minister said in response to questions about whether the state of emergency would be renewed.
