Between Monday (June 29) and Tuesday (June 30), Mozambique recorded six more Covid-19 coronavirus infections, bringing the total to 889, the Ministry of Health announced yesterday (June 30).
“The new cases reported today are all of Mozambican nationality, and all are the result of surveillance in health facilities and the tracking of contacts of positive cases,” the Ministry of Health press release reads.
The newly diagnosed cases, including one under 14 years old, are spread among Zambézia (03), Tete (01), Sofala (01) and Maputo provinces (01).
Of the 889 infections registered in Mozambique, 816 are locally transmitted and 73 are imported. Meanwhile, 232 patients are reported as recovered.
Nampula and Cabo Delgado provinces in northern Mozambique have the highest number of active cases, with 268 and 154 respectively.
Since the announcement of the first Covid-19 case in Mozambique on March 22, the country has conducted 29,516 tests and screened more than one million people, with 20,613 people suspected of Covid-19 infections placed under home quarantine and 2,271 still being monitored by health authorities.
Mozambique has been in a state of emergency since April 1.
The head of state, Filipe Nyusi, announced on Sunday the extension of the state of emergency for the third time – the maximum provided for in the Constitution – with phased lifting of some restrictions.
Schools will reopen in stages, there will be international air connections with some countries again, more staff will be allowed in the workplace and museums will be able to reopen.
All measures must follow compliance with preventive measures relating to social distance, hand washing, wearing a mask and reducing mobility.
The Covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 505,500 lives and infected more than 10.32 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.
The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December in Wuhan, a city in central China.
