Mozambique registers 1,000 cases of human trafficking per year, according to Attorney General’s Office (PGR) spokesman Alexandre Chiconela.
Speaking in Maputo at a press conference marking World Day against Trafficking in Persons, Chiconela said: “At the level of Mozambique, we are talking about 1,000 victims a year. It’s a pretty worrying estimate.”
Victims of this crime are often enticed with money and promises of new opportunities outside the country, especially in neighbouring South Africa, whose economy is one of the most advanced in the region.
The PGR hopes to raise awareness among the Mozambican population and communities about this type of crime, and wants to strengthen border control and speed up the process of improving the law for the protection of whistle-blowers and witnesses as a way of combating trafficking.
