Mozambique records 25,000 new cases of cancer – AIM

Mozambique recorded, in 2022, an increase in cancer cases of around 25,000, with cervical cancer contributing 5,000 new cases, followed by cases of prostate cancer, breast cancer and Kaposi’s sarcoma.

The information was recently unveiled, in Maputo, by Cesaltina Lorenzoni, scientific and pedagogical director of Maputo Central Hospital (HCM), during a visit by the American-Brazilian oncology mission [Hospital AC Camargo and Hospital de Amor from Brazil; MD Anderson Cancer Center, from the U.S.] , as part of celebrations of world cancer day, which is marked on February 4.

“The mortality resulting from these pathologies is relatively high. We have challenges to face the advanced stage of this disease in which many patients are”, Lorenzoni said.

According to the director, there has been collaboration between internal and external partners who, from time to time, bring to Mozambique more up-to-date techniques to deal with the disease.

During the mission, six urology patients and eleven others from the gynaecological forum benefited from surgeries.

Prostate cancer, according to Amâncio Oliveira, a urologist at HCM, has been frequently registered and is the main cause of hospitalization, “but unfortunately, patients arrive too late and many of them are not eligible for surgery.”
