The African Union has approved support of US$5.5 million to mitigate the effects of El Niño on 125,000 people in Mozambique, following an assessment by the specialist agency African Risk Capacity (ARC).
According to a government document consulted by Lusa this Wednesday, the amount is the result of an analysis carried out by the ARC, an agency of the African Union.
“A payout of US$ 5,512,522 dollars was determined, which will benefit around 125,000 people in the regions most affected by the El Niño phenomenon,” reads the document on budget execution in the first nine months of the year.
“It is also important to highlight that the government continues to make efforts to ensure the replacement of infrastructure damaged by heavy rains, floods, inundations and terrorism in some districts in the north of Cabo Delgado,” it adds.
The budget execution document also states that, “in order to meet the seasonal forecasts” of the National Institute of Meteorology for the 2023-2024 agricultural season, the government signed with the ARC “an insurance policy against drought”, worth a total of US$2 million (€1.8 million).
Mozambique is considered one of the countries most vulnerable to the effects of global climate change, cyclically facing floods and tropical cyclones during the rainy season from October to April.
El Niño is a change in atmospheric dynamics caused by an increase in ocean temperatures. The phenomenon caused torrential rains in East Africa this year, with hundreds of deaths in countries including Kenya, Burundi, Tanzania, Somalia and Ethiopia.
