The reading of the sentence in the case of murdered prosecutor Vilanculo scheduled for last Friday (January 12) in Maputo civil jail was postponed without notice, no reason or further date being given.
The journalists who were there to cover the event only learned of the postponement on the spot, and not even the guards knew that the reading was to take place. Apart from journalists, no one else was on the scene, according to a DW Africa correspondent.
The case concerns the murder of prosecutor Marcelino Vilanculo on April 11, 2016, on his own doorstep. At the time he was investigating a wave of abductions allegedly involving Danish Satar, the nephew of Nini Satar, a well-known Mozambican businessman on parole after serving a sentence for involvement in the 2000 murder of journalist Carlos Cardoso.
Danish Satar was deported from Italy to Mozambique at the end of 2015 after leaving the country in unknown circumstances. He was on bail awaiting progress in a trial in which he was accused of involvement in abductions.
Accused
There are four defendants in the case, one of whom is Edith Cylindo, accused of being one of the material perpetrators of the crime. She allegedly followed the magistrate from his workplace to near his residence, where she gave orders for his execution.
The trial began in Maputo civil jail on November 25, 2017.
Nor is this is the first case of its type. In 2014, Diniz Silica, a judge who also had cases related to the wave of abductions in Maputo, was shot dead by persons unknown.
