Chapo calls for free movement between Mozambique and Portugal
In world rankings, Rwanda has the largest number of women in parliament, with 51 female deputies out of a total of 80, according to data recently released by the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
Three African countries are in the top 10: the Seychelles, with 43.8 percent; Senegal with 42.7 percent and South Africa with 42.4 percent. Bolivia, Cuba, Sweden, Mexico, Ecuador and Finland are among the countries cited for healthy levels of female representation.
Among the African Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique is best placed, in 15th position with 39.6 percent women members. Angola is 23rd with 26.8 percent, Cape Verde 71st with 23 percent, Sao Tome and Principe 100th with 18.2 percent and Guinea-Bissau 130th with 13.7 percent.
In the two African countries with an upper chamber – Zimbabwe and Burundi – gender distribution remains largely balanced.
Haiti takes the wooden spoon, with no women at all in its two chambers’ 115 seats.
