At least 24 roads in the central and northern regions of the country are currently impassable due to damage caused by the heavy rain falling since December of last year.
Cabo Delgado province is worst affected, with six roads, followed by Nampula (five), Sofala (four), and Niassa, Zambézia and Tete with three each, according to the latest update on natural disasters in the country.
While in other parts of the country the roads affected are closed to all road traffic, circulation, although with restrictions, is still possible in Sofala and Zambézia.
In Cabo Delgado province, road circulation on the following roads is constrained: Montepuez-Meluco, Macomia-Ouasse, Sunate-Ouasse, Montepuez-Nairotos, as well as on the bridge over the Montepuez River.
In Nampula province, the affected roads are: Mazua-Chipene, Memba-Mazua, Naguema-Chocas Mar, R669 Entete-Cruzamento and Malema-Chihilo.
In Niassa province, the affected roads are: Cuamba-Rio Lúrio, Unango-Macalodge and Nova Madeira-Rio Rovuma.
In Tete province, the affected roads are: Madamba-Mutarara, Matema-Namalimba and Bene-Zumbu .
Roads with restricted traffic in the centre of the country include Sena-Chemba, Nhamapanza-Macossa and Chemba-Tambara, in Sofala province, as well as Mangaja-Nante, Uape-Intoro and Derre-Alto Benfica, in Zambézia province.
Reconstruction of the bridge over the Montepuez River in Cabo Delgado, destroyed about a month ago, will start in March, and the works will cover the entire structure. In the meantime, an alternative route under construction should allow the circulation of vehicles up to 10 tons.
In the case of other roads, the National Road Administration (ANE) told ‘Notícias’ yesterday that emergency repair works led by ANE’s maintenance sector were underway.
