Train traffic on the Ressano Garcia railway line was affected between Sunday afternoon and Monday by the derailment of an 80-wagon freight train.
The accident occurred at the Incomáti stop, between kilometres 81+100 and 80+200, where 37 wagons became detached. The remaining 43 travelled on to the Port of Matola.
According to Adélio Dias, Director of Communication and Image at the Mozambique Ports and Railways Company (CFM), the track did not suffer any substantial damage, except for some broken sleepers, the replacement of which would not interrupt circulation.
He explained that the derailment was caused by a bulge, a defect on the upper part of the rails.
By this Monday afternoon, final assessment of the track was underway to authorise the circulation of trains on this line, which connects Mozambique and South Africa.
Less than two months ago, for similar reasons and on the same line, a train with 50 wagons carrying chromium derailed. Despite the gravity of the incident, there was no loss of life.
