Residents in the Quionga administrative post in Palma district on Tuesday (02-07) denounced the application of arbitrary fees at the Namoto border post, which separates Mozambique from Tanzania, allegedly levied by the migration police stationed there.
The complaint was made during a popular rally led by the first secretary of the Frelimo provincial committee, José Kalime, at the headquarters village of the Quionga administrative post.
According to Gabriel Paulo, one of the residents who took part in the rally, there are no fixed fees.
“Before the border post closed, we paid amounts that varied between 120 and 200 meticais on the Mozambican side and almost the same amount on the Tanzanian side. But now they charge 500 meticais everywhere. In addition, we have to pay for passage on private boats crossing the Rovuma River at prices that vary between 200 and 250 meticais,” Paulo complained.
In response, José Kalime said that he would work with the competent authorities to solve the problem, while asking the population to be vigilant.
“This border was closed for a long time due to terrorist attacks, as a way for both countries to control movements. Now that it has reopened, we have to intensify surveillance,” Kalime said.
