The Quelimane-Chinde ferry route in Zambézia resumed operations this Wednesday. A fully refurbished vessel was commissioned, with a capacity of 150 passengers and an average journey time of nine hours. The refurbishment cost approximately 30 million meticais.
A refurbished vessel, named after Namiara, a village in Chinde, has a capacity of 150 passengers and 60 tons of cargo, including a freezer with a capacity of 250 kilograms. It is a lifeline for those living in Chinde district, a difficult-to-access area.
The vessel was refurbished by CFM, which has, since the end of 2023, managed the Tansmaritima company, previously under state management, through the IGEPE.
Service on the Quelimane-Chinde route was suspended five years ago following the breakdown of the vessel then in operation.
