Staff of the public administration have called on the Mozambican government to provide a risk allowance to all public servants assigned to districts plagued by terrorism in the northern province of Cabo Delgado.
The request came in a message, on Thursday, in the provincial capital, Pemba, at an event held on the occasion of International Public Service Day, which is marked on 23 June every year.
According to a report on Radio Mozambique, the message argued that a risk allowance “could serve as an incentive to ensure that public administration staff remain at their workplaces and would avoid constant requests for transfer to other, safer districts”.
Despite the adversities, according to the Cabo Delgado public servants, “we still want to work. However, there is a need to continue assisting and allocating subsistence, such as food kits, housing tents with mattresses and other means of subsistence for doctors, nurses, and teachers among others.”
“So we are asking for a risk allowance for all State employees who are continuing, in an exemplary and fearless manner, to provide services under fire, and are living through unforgettable traumas”, they said.
The Secretary of State for Cabo Delgado, Antonio Supeia, who led the ceremony, recognized the courage and the spirit of patriotism demonstrated by the employees and agents of the State who are already in some of the districts worst hit by terrorism, such as Palma, Mocímboa da Praia, Quissanga, Macomia and Muidumbe, as part of the preparations for the return of displaced people to their home areas.
“This act clearly demonstrates how our employees and state agents are true patriots, true heroes at the service of the nation and a clear demonstration of the resilience of our public administration, even in adverse situations”, said Supeia.
Since October 2017, terrorist attacks have caused death of more than two thousand people in parts of Cabo Delgado and more than 850,000 people have been displaced, triggering a humanitarian crisis.
