Mozambique: Provincial health worker rapes child, infects her with HIV

A minor has become infected with the HIV virus in the city of Quelimane, capital of the Zambézia province, after she was raped by an adult neighbour, an employee of the Provincial Health Directorate.
The crime was reported last week by the rapist’s wife, who surprised her 41-year-old husband having sexual intercourse with the 11-year-old girl in the bathroom.
“He used to call me whenever he went to the bathroom. He told me to take off his clothes,” the child, who lived next door to the now-detained rapist, revealed.
According to the Zambezia police authorities, the child does not recall the number of times she was sexually abused by her neighbour.
Medical tests confirmed that rape had been committed and revealed that the minor had contracted Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).
