Protesters in the city of Maxixe in Inhambane, blocked National Road Number One (EN1) yesterday, looting commercial establishments and setting buildings on fire. At least one person died during the protests.
The country’s main highway was blocked In the early hours of Monday, preventing the circulation of vehicles. Vehicle passengers were forced to make journeys on foot.
During the protest, the police checkpoint located between the districts of Maxixe and Morrumbene was set on fire. Businesses did not escape unscathed, one commercial establishment being looted and left empty.
Protesters also attacked and set fire to the Frelimo party headquarters, as well as the facilities of the Água da Região Sul company.
Police used force to disperse the protesters, and all public establishments in Maxixe were closed.
