The Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM), via their provincial command in Nampula, have denied that any terrorist attack took place last Friday (17-06) at Lúrio administrative post in Memba district.
“We had information about some movement that could be happening at the border between Cabo Delgado and Nampula, specifically in the area of Lúrio and Siriça, on the basis of which the police deployed a force to the scene to ensure a prompt response in the event of any attack,” spokesman Zacarias Nacute said.
“There was no official information, or official confirmation, of any actual attack in the area. What did happen is that there was instability at the community level due to a possible terrorist threat in an area where our forces, particularly the PRM, are currently on the ground. We have a post in the Lúrio area and are carrying out monitoring work there,” Nacute explained.
The PRM spokesperson admitted there had been some cases of vandalism, but they were not terrorism-linked. “We had information that some stalls [barracas] in the area were looted, but we don’t know for sure if they are exactly terrorists. It could have been someone who took advantage of the panic situation to steal goods,” Nacute suggested.
But the PRM were certain that, “at this moment, there was no attack in our province, in Memba and Eráti”.
The watchword within the corporation remained surveillance and prevention, Nacute said.
“Police deployed on the spot and at the borders have been reinforced to ensure that terrorists do not enter our territory, given the fact that Nampula [province] was a recruitment hotspot for individuals joining the criminal groups,” he concluded.
