An instruction issued on April 4th by the general command of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) mandates the reinforcement of intelligence activity regarding the foci of demonstrations and their real motivation, before their outbreak, and the reinforcement of security in district commands, police stations and posts to prevent any threat by means of preventative action within communities, including civic education.
The PRM indicates that the measure stems from the fact that it is following with great concern, through social networks, the dissemination of messages that implicitly incite the holding of violent demonstrations, including the vandalisation of public and private goods, allegedly in protest at the high cost of living, readjustment of fuel prices, the rising price of basic necessities, toll fees, and so on.
In this way, though measures to guarantee public safety and tranquillity throughout the national territory, the police mandates the strengthening of coordination and cooperation with public and private institutions, including civil society and communities, in order to prevent and combat crime, and the permanent reinforcement of forces close to vital and strategic economic objects, with a focus on banking and financial institutions, shopping centres and places where people gather.
The PRM also says that operational actions of a general nature must be continued so as to guarantee public order and the improvement of the combative preparation of the forces and respective technique to face any criminal event or announced hostility.
