Mozambican Prime Minister Carlos Agostinho do Rosario on Monday invited all citizens to restore healthy links with nature, and guarantee the sustainable exploitation of natural resources so as to preserve the balance of the country’s ecosystems.
Rosario, who represented President Filipe Nyusi, was speaking at the Maputo ceremony opening the 2021 judicial year.
This year’s theme was “For a Judiciary that Protects the Environment”, and Rosario stressed that environmental protection is not the exclusive responsibility of the state. “Let us all defend the environment, protecting the legacy we have received from our ancestors, so that we can hand it over, in better conditions to future generations”, he urged.
The Prime Minister said the government must reflect on the responsibilities arising from the constitutional imperative that citizens should live in a healthy and balanced environment. There was a legal and ethical duty to defend the environment, “which is a common asset”, he added.
The fight against corruption went hand in hand with the protection of the environment, he continued. It was corruption that facilitates the illegal exploitation of timber, ivory and rhinoceros horns, Rosario declared, with the connivance of some public officials.
Magistrates, said Rosario, “have the noble responsibility of ensuring the consolidation of the rule of law in our country”.
He insisted that the judiciary must work to promote integrity and professional ethics in the public sector, which could help consolidate the culture of transparency, accountability and responsibility. By taking on the mission of preventing, fighting and punishing corruption, Rosario added, the judicial system is participating actively in the struggle to eliminate corruption completely.
He pledged that the government will continue to work “to ensure the organic, functional and financial independent of the judiciary so that it has the conditions and the morale to fight against corruption, whether internal or external to the judicial power”.
